PRETTY | WHATEVER is a collection of “phoems” (photo-poems) curated by Joseph Roberts on view at Center on Contemporary Art (Seattle, WA) July 8 to August 7, 2010. Artist’s Reception is July 8, 2010 with bassist Evan Flory-Barnes.

I have also donated $200 to the sanctuary for the purchase and replanting of 800 sea turtle eggs.

Gelatin Silver Prints. Every morning I take a photo of the art I created while sleeping every day from today to the day I die.

Blog + video. I rate the world’s beaches by their heelability (def: how possible it is to walk in heels on the beach).

#023: Participant-Observation Ethnography Of Middle America

Slideshow of Photographs. Music is Nobody Girl. I drive around middle America and conduct an ethnographic study by taking part in various local activities as a participant and documenting them with my camera.

Photographs. I take a photo of guys looking at me as they drive by in their cars while I stand on the street corner.

#005: Dance To Conjure The Native Species

I go around the world to places where humans have destroyed the natural habitats of endangered species and do a dance to conjure them back to that place. I will dance until the animal comes back, effectively going back in time and forward at once.

Video. I find places I wish I had family to have fun with – places I wish I belonged – and videotape them so I can connect in some way.

#008: Posing For America’s Quadriplegic Veterans

Photo collages. Music: Taylor Swift’s National Anthem. Here I do what I can for America’s Veterans (posing and encouraging the to take photos of me!)

The video is me in the ocean waves at El Cuco. The photographs were taken at the circus and were put in glass cases with cheap earrings and submerged in a few inches of water. Over the course of the exhibit, held at The Home Of, the water crawled up the photographs causing irreparable water damage.

Inspired by the current technological limitations on facial reconstructions, the predominance of women’s faces in the media, and the internet’s ability to archive faces via Facebook and Google, I comment on having my face taken and my attempts to reconstruct it. Photographs, approximately 20 in the series.

Performance with the Fantastic Nobodies in “Live After Birth: a Situation in Two Parts” at the Andrew Edlin Gallery, NYC 2011 (above photos), as well as in other projects (photos from the Hammerstein Ballroom below).

Raw material is drawn from Be Story Free, a play by Inverse Theater. With dancers Troy Ogilvie, Carson Reiners, and Luke Murphy, text by Kirk Wood Bromley, voice by Steve Burns, and musical arrangement by John Gideon. Below are excerpts of Video 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 of the 18 videos (total length approximately 40 minutes).
