A brief attempt to work with other people’s images.

Stolen was my only sustained experiment with appropriated images and text.

Having already begun making derivative works from photographs of myself, I wondered whether I might be interested in working from images made by others. Using found images drawn from sources ranging from pornography to popular culture and theory, I transformed and distorted the original material into new works.

The experiment taught me that I preferred working with my own image. Around the same time, I also experimented with photographing other models and using those photographs as the basis for artworks. I found that working with other people’s images and bodies came with responsibilities and constraints that made me feel less free as an artist. Using myself as material allowed me to take greater risks and follow ideas wherever they led.

Rather than opening a new direction, Stolen helped clarify the one I would ultimately pursue.
